What is retoNet?

retoNet is a site created to enable the sharing of experiences within the field of digital journalism. With the help of tutorials, practical guides and useful source recommendations, we aim to bridge the gap between print journalism and modern multimedia internet productions.

Journalism has become digital. News stories are now disseminated in pixels per second.

Those of us who for years thought that we wouldn’t get sucked in, and that the typical newsroom would survive forever, today find ourselves drowning in rivers of multimedia production that frankly overwhelm and alienate us.

Gradually, some with a greater, some with a lesser degree of resistance, we have come to recognize that it is time for change. It’s time to learn how to use this new technology and all that it offers, especially on Internet.

We are not talking about surfing or sending emails. Nor are we talking merely about learning to use tools that strengthen our communication, such as instant messaging or Skype. We are referring to the gradual process of creating a vast network whereby freelance journalists and writers can encounter and contribute to a space for constant interaction, inspiration and work.

We are talking about taking advantage of new platforms and programs in order to enrich the way we present information. We are referring to the need to meet the challenge of internet journalism; to keep telling stories, but in a different way.

Clearly, this challenge is shared by all those who, like us, were not born with a technology chip ready-implanted in their mind and who, therefore, feel daunted by the prospect of building a website, editing a photo or building a slideshow.

We created retoNet because we were moved by an impulse to share our exploration of these new languages. We believe that this site could become a place to explore online tutorials, practical tips and references or any clue that helps to guide our thinking and work in the days of online video, iPhones, blogs and social networking.

The premise of retoNet is that the Internet, that indomitable monster with a thousand heads, if we rise to the challenge, can be converted into a sensational and inspiring instrument.
